- What in the world are indoor plants?
- Do indoor or houseplants need light?
- How much light is good light?
- Does indoor light mean streaming natural light?
- Is artificial light enough?
We often get these questions from our customers. Hope this blog will help you quell all those questions!
First things first, there is nothing called a truly indoor plant that thrives in complete low, dull, warm indoor light that we usually have in modern homes. Yes, many can survive, but to thrive, they definitely need good bright light and to top it, small glances of Doctor Sun is an absolute bliss. Let me get to the details of the various types of indoor light is usually seen and what plants can thrive there.
BRIGHT INDOORS WITH DIRECT LIGHT
Some indoor plants that thrive in this light are Jade varieties, Bougainvillea, Cactii, Succulents, Dracaena, Palms, Ficus varieties, Hoya, Flowering creepers, Geraniums, Herbs, Cryptanthus and many others.
Tip: Care will need to be taken for these plants in hot sunny days in Indian Summers.
BRIGHT INDOORS WITH INDIRECT LIGHT
Ferns, Anthuriums, Aglaoenema, Money plants, Philodendron, hedera, Begonia, Bromeliads, Colocasia, Alocasia, Chlorophytum, Spathyphylum, Sansevieria, Calathea, ZZ, Orchids and many others.
Tip: This spot is a perfect spot for most indoor plants as its a good mix of light and shade.
SEMI SHADE INDOORS
Spaces where light is pretty low falling directly on them, but ambient light is nice and bright.
Ferns, Aglaoenema, Money plants, Philodendron, Chlorophytum, Sansevieria, Calathea, ZZ, Orchids and many others.
Tip: Again a good mix of bright light and shade, however plants may need to be moved to brighter spaces in winters or when there are long spate of days with low light.
SHADED INDOORS
Shaded Indoor spots are usually the darker place of a room where direct sunlight wouldn't stream in (rooms with windows that face North or South, or that have a biggish wall or obstruction outside the window etc).
Aglaoenema, Money plants, Fittonia, Philodendrons, Sansevieria, Calathea, ZZ are some suitable plants that can be grown here.
Tip: Variegations may fade if you keep some plants in shaded indoors for more than a couple of months. During low light intensity days, its advisable to show them some sunlight. You can leave them in a shaded balcony overnight and ring them indoors before 12 pm.
